Wow!! Tough one, should I sit here and risk looking stupid for thinking a woman or child is an animal screaming ,and let someone scream for their life, then yahoo answer it the next day when its too late. You can be pretty sure it wasn't any kind of owl; while some of them can produce eerie sounds, none of them (at least not in your area) can produce a "screaming" sound - Barred Owls can make a variety of odd, loud noises, but 'monkey' sounds are about as close as they get to screaming. Screech Owls don't screech; they sound a bit like a siren or whinny like a horse, and they're not very loud at all. Saw-whet Owls don't do anything like a scream in my experience, even if you were likely to have one down your way. I'd call the police on principle - let them check the area. I've heard rabbits produce a rather human-like scream, but 15 minutes seems like a long time for a rabbit to be screaming. Personally, I'm kind of surprised you waited this long to wonder - if it was that disturbing, you should have got on the horn right away; that's what the cops are there for.

Rabbits make a godawful scream when they are injured or dying - though most people think it sounds more like a baby than a woman. But it is definitely a high-pitched and awful noise that sounds very much like it could have come from a human.

It was an Owl. Not sure what kind, but I heard one a few nights ago. It sounds like a person screaming? Yep! Most likely an owl. I freaked out when I first heard it.

When my cat was in trouble (a fox was circling it) it sounded like a child screaming/yelling. This is a very eery sound...but they make it when they are in danger. I would still report it though...

It was probably a saw whet owl. It sounds like this:
