Non of the suggestions have worked so far

Still not resolved this problem, the clock is also showing ---- on the radio. Pressing or turning the re set knob does nothing. The car is a 323 i (2,5 engine) w reg 2000

Hit your "BC" left stalk button until your time is displayed on your dash display (right at the line below your odometer). It should rotate like... time - temperature - mpg - range - ave speed - (and back to) time....etc.
Then, turn the right push-button on the dash and hold... the clock will fast-forward/reverse.
If you pushed that button instead of turning, you will be able to change 12hr/24hr settings. But remember, all these must be done with your time appearing in the central dash display.
NB: Hmm... I've got the feeling I've answered this before...

For e46 cars:
You have two sticks on your front instrument panel. The left one your press to reset your trip counter and the right one you use to set your clock. Turn the right one to adjust the clock time. It also changes to 24hr time if you press it.

Try holding the setting button in for a few seconds.Wait for it to flash, then you should get your options to set the time/date etc.

It would help if you said which year you have and what model. 325 is different than an M3 for example.
