ASEAN integration is not at the level of the EU, yet. It took the EU nearly 60 years to reach the level of integration that they have today, ASEAN has only been around a few decades. They do provide a strong regional block, but there are many different disputes between member states over water and fishing rights that typically halts integration. Also, much like the AU, they do not have a significant pool of resources to accomplish major changes yet. I agree that ASEAN's best interest would be to mimick the integration of the EU, but it is going to take some time before we see anything like this. They also do not necessarily need a common currency, nor is the name of it particularly important. Most of their trading is done on the US dollar, which they usually like because it keeps their prices stable against the US in trade. If we had three broad based currencies, the competition and decrease in efficiency would eventually muscle one out, which is usually the newest one.
