Pollution is not the World's problem. It is a problem for Humans. When we have polluted ourselves into extinction, a new balance will be achieved, without us in the equation. The World will not care.
But that is not what they meant.
They want you to discuss the good and the bad parts of pollution. The bad is obvious, that is, it makes air and water dirty, dangerous, contaminated etc. It removes finite resources such as coal and oil, generates global warming (yes, it does exist!) etc etc. Less than 30 years ago, you could drink the water straight from Lake Superior and it would not make you sick.
But there is a positive - without the pollution-generating coal furnaces, we probably would still be living in squalid conditions such as 19th century London. Industrialisation has undoubtedly made life easier for those countries willing to adopt it. Factories churned out cheaper every-day items such as plates, cutlery, toilets, bricks, sewer pipes etc, and sanitation and disease were clearly affected by these advancements.
The dilemma today is this - is it still worth the pollution, now that the alternative energies are clearly cleaner, but more expensive? For instance - Solar panels, while a seeming God-send, actually require more energy to manufacture than they will ever generate in their expected lifetime (about 10-15 years), so at the moment, they are not energy efficient. That should change in the future, however.
So, think about it, look up generation of alternative energies, and remember the solar panel example. It may be that other alternatives are more efficient.
