What are some good places to shop etc?

I'm not going as a tourist so I don't want to climb the bridge or see an opera or anything like that?

Don't go to Kings Cross!
Go to Coogee Beach and have Barrumundi (fish) and chips while sitting watching everyone walking and talking and enjoying the view. Go to Kirribilli and walk around the Park, from there you can see the Opera House and see all the boats and other traffic in the Harbour. Take a Bus ride to Palm Beach where the "rich and famous" holiday.

For shopping, start with the major department stores in Sydney - David Jones and Myer.
There are thousands of different kinds of shops, like any other city.

parramatta westfield is probably the biggest shopping ctr in sydney if not the southern hemisphere. Maybe try warringah mall in brookvale to shop and then go to Manly for drinks/food etc then an easy ferry to the city.
