I just moved to Japan and i sometimes hear sirens coming from the streets. It's not police or ambulance sirens. It reminds me of the bomb sirens that they show you in the old movies. I want to know what these sirens are for? This is my second time hearing it and the last time I heard it at night too.

Please first tell me which town you live and what time you hear sirens.

Addition:
Isn't it fire siren? In many towns of Japan, siren rings in case of a fire.

Addition2:
This time, I think it's a siren of flood warning. Flood warning is now issued in that area.

Sometimes small towns have sirens to tell people that it's noon, or that it's the evening curfew. My small town in Nebraska did that, and the neighboring town (Sarabetsu, in Hokkaido) does the noon whistle, at any rate.

If you are in the big city, it might be a siren warning about air pollution levels or something? The best bet is to call city hall and ask. If you live in a city, there might be a Co-ordinator of International Relations who speaks English and can find out the answer for you. (-: If you *are* the CIR, ask your boss.

Actually, you should ask you boss, no matter who you are. I'm sure they'd be happy to tell you what's going on.

Japanese towns are kind enough to remind their citizens that they should be out of the sack by 06:00. Seriously-it's paternalism in action. It's also a good way to keep that gear in shape in case of real emergency.

Siren for telling you its 5:00 or 6:00 o'clock.
An alarm for oxidase smog.
The siren for notice before explain something to elder people via local wired speakers in your town, etc..etc...

I think small towns and villages has their own rules for sirens.
