Both good and bad, as a few lead a different path to the majority and tend to curse people and basically do things that go against the Rede..
Well what about Christians and Muslims ?? are they good or bad, you see there are very bad people in both those faiths and a lot of them are clergy...
I rest my case, and to those who say Witches aren't real, I say unto you, I am real and you need an education away from your Harry Potter books..

Witches or female magicians are neither strictly good or bad. Simply being a witch does not denote malevolence or benevolence as each are individuals, so it depends on the woman. Also, there is some misinformation. Wicca is NOT a type of magic, it is spirituality that happens to have some magical followers, no more or less than any other religion or spirituality. As this is a question regarding magic I see not why Wicca would be relevant. Also witch is NOT an alternate term for Wicca. So I do not see why one answerer was confused and asked which was being reffered to witch or Wicca. Another point is Wicca, when referring to the spirituality, should be spelt with an uppercase "W." Other wicca means something different as it was the old English word for wizard. This seems to lead people to think that Wicca is magic which is not right. As Wicca is a spirituality and not all Wiccans are magical.

Magic itself is colourless, neutral so has no colours. The connotations of colours such as "black" meaning evil, "white" meaning purity have no relevance in magic. Magic used soley for evil, malevolent purposes is Dark Arts, so called because magic itself is an art. Again, magic has connotations with evil however whether magic is evil or not is purely dependent on the wizard or witch. So one cannot generalize and say that all witches are bad or good. However, most are morally centred, regardless of whether they are religious or not, so are decent people.

Well, I notice from the other answers so far that hardly anyone knows what a witch is. Of course, there is a lot of misinformation about this subject. But, a true witch is actually a seeker of wisdom and most likely a person who practices the old ways, prior to the advent of the scourge of christianity. I might not be one to give an opinion as I myself practice the old ways. Asking questions about people who are non-christian of others won't always get you a good answer. I might suggest that you read some books on the subject.

It depends what you mean.
Witches in society are portrayed as mean, witchy old things. However 'witch' technically means wise in the way of herbs, so a chef could be a witch. Therefore 'witch-doctor' would be 'herb doctor'. Essentially witches are not bad, it is the way they are portrayed in our society. But in the Stuart times in England, King James (the sixth?) held many trials for innocent women, even if they had an animal they were suspected and killed. Many of our stories come from this time, so it is not surprising how they are shown as evil, witchy women with black cats, broomsticks, caldrens and spells, which is fairly inaccurate. Even Bugs Bunny got into the action, with Witch Hazel, a women wanting to eat him.
Witches are not bad in real life, but in stories people exaggerate the truth and work on the more interesting sterotype.

A witch...or a person who calls themselves a witch belong to an umbrella group known as pagans. Not not every witch practises witchcraft and all pagans, witches included, acknowledge mother earth and the sky fatrher and all of lifes forces inclusive of mother nature. Whether witches are good or bad depends on the person (witch) that you might meet....but know that a large porportionate of witches all seek spirituality and enlightenment. Witches and pagans alike do not believe in the christian conception of the devil and never have done. Perhaps that might answer some of your question. Hope this has helped.

oh goodgod!

Give it up.
a witch is a witch is a witch. That's like asking if a doctor is good or bad or a politician. Wanna good witch, ask them to help you. Want a bad witch, kick over their alter.

If people weren't so bent up on their perceptions of good and bad, you wouldn't even ask this question. Go and find someone who calls them a witch and ask them. They'll lauigh at the question too.

I can only imagine if they are green skinned or in a shakespear play they must be bad. *throws her hands up and walks away*

Witches are neither good nor evil; it is all a matter of personal ethics and preferences. And honestly, this question is next to unanswerable because many witches don't believe that such polar oppsites as purely good and purely evil exist.

Witchcraft means work of the wicked. Those who follow it use evil spirits on other people. So witches are bad, but for some reason wiccans like to call themselves witches. If you ask me they're a confused bunch.
