The way to do this is to take away 64 from 764, because there were 64 more tickets sold to the students.

Now you have left 700.

You only have students and adults to work with, so you divide 700/2 and the answer is 350.

the trick in setting up a word problem - is getting
a linear equation to express what you're talking about

let s = student tickets
and a = adult tickets

we have two equations given

a + s = 764
and
a + 64= s

NOW we can substitue to solve for the answer
since we now KNOW what 's' equals

go to our first equation a + s = 764
a + a + 64 = 764
2a + 64 = 764......subtract 64 from both sides

2a = 700

and you have got it from here

all the best
