Wow that's like $100.
We don't tip anyone in Japan. (Currently living in Japan)
I don't know why the bell booy was mad. He was probably just confused.

No you weren't supposed to do that. It is considered an insult in Japan to give extra compensation for a job they are already getting paid to do. There is also this unspoken rule that one is not to gloat about doing a great job at work, and it kinda defeats that concept when someone tips them for doing a good job.

You don't tip at all in Japan. Maybe at a hostess club or an american establishment but that is about it.

That is just a custom in Japan, you should research more customs in Japan because the littlest things that westerners don't think about turn out to be a real insult in the east.

One thing you should of researched first was japanese customs. You don't tip in Japan, it sometimes can be considered an insult!

Similar in other Asian countries as well. Especially in Japan!
One thing I like about visiting Japan is that there is no tipping, something we need to get rid of too.

Tip is considered as a kind of alms for the Japanese people (particulary when it comes from a "gaijin"). However, he has no right to be upset. If he works in services with foreign visitors, he should know there are some cultural differences.

Holy moly! What kind of crap did you pull that you felt you had to tip $100 for????? Maybe that's why he looked upset.

As the others say, there's no tipping in Japan. On the flip side, you can't be a total nuisance, and then try to make up with it with a little cash. They'll think you're a barbarian (-:.

No you don't tip in Japan.
A large tip like that is particularly insulting.
