Does anyone ever think that the norms about sex in America are abnormal. If you study cultures you will note that in many other countries it is normal for people to marry and start families as young as 13 years old. Is it wrong for teenagers to want to have sex when their bodies are ready for sex (ie. they can physically produce children) when they are about 13 years old but their society is telling them to wait for another 5 years? Do you think other countries are too lenient about sex?

Just thinking about it, and I am 18 years old, not 13, just in case you were thinking I was.

Most countries have a legal age of consent and it is against the law for someone under that age to have sex. Mind you, it has never stopped them in the past and it won't stop them in the future either. The problem is that it is usually not the under-age person who is punished but the partner if he or she is a few years older. The age of consent varies from country to country. In Australia it is 16. In parts of the USA it is 18. In some parts of Europe it is as low as 13.

All children should be taught about sex, safe sex and contraception. Signing pledges to refrain from sex until marriage doesn't work. In the USA there are more unwanted pregnancies among teenagers who have signed the pledge than among those who haven't. They are all having the same amount of sex but the educated ones are taking precautions.

All over the world the official age for marriage is 18 for boys & girls, with some exceptions in islamic countries where the age of girls vary from 14-18(the islamic Judge should see the girl if she is less than 18 to decide if she is physically mature).
All marriages not in regulation with above, are made in secret.

You do not fully stop developing until you are around 23-25

Child birth for a 13 year old i would imagine would be quite a strian on a undeveloped body and mind. For a male they are nowhere mature enough to handle this time of stress.

They may be physically capable of producing babies, but girls at that age are not physically ready to have babies, let alone mentally and emotionally ready. Pregnancy at a young age can end up stunting growth and causing other problems. Nevertheless, I agree that many Americans are just way too uptight about sex and sexual matters.

the US is rediculously puritannical when it comes to sex, but those countires that expect kids to get married and start families are by no means "permissive" about it. those young marriages are used to curtail sexual activity and limit it to the culturally sanctioned marriage bed, but this comes along with ZERO sex ed for girls, so a great deal of them walk into their wedding night with no clue about what is going to happen to them.

from my own observations, the cultural expectations and taboos are actually quite similar, they are just dealt with differently.
