Democratic and capitalist, though still transitioning from it's communist governances less than 20 years ago. The government is still extremely corrupt, but the people are much happier under Putin's (Vladimir Putin, who is the current president) regime than they were in any communist administration, proving that some democratic progress has developed.

The problem is that the world isn't like black and white :). There are not JUST democratic and communist regimes in the world. For example, you definitely heard about monarchy which still exists as a form of governance. There are theocratic (religious) states, where the power belongs to a group of religious leaders and some dictatorships with the military junta at the head of a state. There are a lot of countries that are somehow in between with their political systems. As for Russia it is definitely NOT a communist country. A communist country is based on a few simple principles: 1) nationalisation of ALL industry; 2) prohibition of the private entrepreneurial initiative and activities; 3) one-party (communist) political system with intrusive and coercive political control over the population; 4) the ultimate proclaimed goal is the building of communism. I hope you know it is NOT the case with Russia now. At the same time, not all Russian democratic institutions function properly, let’s put it this way. There are a host of reasons for that but it’s the topic for a different talk.

I tell the many Russians I meet on the Koh Lam Ferry in Pattaya , Thailand ... that there is not a more richly endowed country in the world than Russia. It has un-limited resources of Oil, gas, gold, silver, platinum, steel, Iron Ore, copper, Agriculture i/c cereal grains, sugar beets, potatoes, enormous fish aquaculture of salmon, etc., smart people, a space program, etc., etc. The Russian population should be far richer than USA or Germany ... but it plods along on a par with a low end, 3 world country std of living due primarily to the incredibly stupid COMMUNIST PARTY. The only possible way to deal with communists to to do what J Stalin & Castro did to their perceived enimies. Take them into a room and shot a 9mm bullet into the back of their heads.

Case closed!

It has combined the worst features of free markets with the totalitarian aspects of Communism to produce a really bad place to live. Corruption is rampant, the president is an ex member of the secret police and it is the only country in the world where life expectancies are falling,. It takes more than elections to have a functioning democracy. but is a very long way from being Communist.
