A Hanjin container ship, Cosco Busan, was heading out of the Oakland Container port in fog under the control of the Port of Oakland pilot who was on the bridge at the time. As he approached the west span of the Bay Bridge the controllers called him to tell him his course was 235 and asked what his intentions were. He said he was heading for the center of the span. A few seconds later he struck the main support and ripped a 100 foot long gash above the water line and in to a fuel tank releasing 58,000 gallons of heavy diesel oil. He then reported that he had struck the bridge, anchored off Treasure Island and returned control to the captain who pumped the remaining fuel to other tanks and contacted appropriate authorities.

You can watch an animation of the incident in the second link.

One of those big cargo ships was heading out of the bay, and bumped in the concrete island that holds up part of the Bay Bridge. The bridge is fine, but it tore a big hole in the ship and dumped a bunch of oil into the bay.

It's really sad, many of the beaches are closed, and hundreds of birds are covered in oil. SF is famous for its crab, too, and the whole crabbing season may have to be skipped this year, since the crab and other shellfish (and everything they eat) is now tainted with oil. But lots of people are pitching in to help clean things up.
