You poor poor Naive little Girl. Something tell me your from Canada. So why don't you come down here and disarm us. If you truly think that we would be safe from attack. You are truly lost in a word of your own.

I'm just glad I don't live in you world.

Are you kidding? what should we do? pass around bottles of Coke, join hands with the world, and sing like in that 70's T.V. commercial? This is the real world, With out the military we would have been dead a long time ago, and the Queen would still be on our money. We wouldn't be showing the world how brave we are, we would be showing the world how stupid we are. Do you think Russia, or China, or any country would follow our lead? No, they would see us as a rich, unprotected country, ripe for the picking. The strong conquering the weak has been the way of the world since man first picked up a rock, and used it as a weapon. The only way to stop it is to have a bigger rock. We don't have to use it, but the world needs to know we have it.

And leave ourselves wide open for an invasion.
The first time a foreign enemy hit America, started controlling communities, lives, everything, you'd want that military back.
Once you realize that you simply cannot go where you wish, to the mall, a friends house, to see family, you'd regret that.
I'm all for peace, but some governments are just looking for a tactical advantage to step in and take over.
Peace is a wonderful thing, but no matter how kind and caring one can be, others are out just looking for conflict and war. You obviously haven't been around long enough to understand this. A bully in school is a great example. A husband that beats his wife and children. You don't need to start anything. Just being present, just being the kind one on the block is enough to tell somebody how weak one is and they can take what they want from you.

Yes, people would attack us without a military here. It's often referred to as resources. Anything that another country lacks that they need, they will gladly take from another country by force. Killing, raping, and enslaving in the process.
Getting rid of our military does not show our adversaries how brave we are. It shows them how stupid we would be. They would have no obstacle, no difficulty rolling in and taking what they wish. The other thing they take from you is your freedom. Every freedom that you enjoy or complain about not having enough of would be gone.
If you want something bad enough and you have no resistance whatsoever in getting it, you will get it.
It's not the military that is the threat anyway. It's the people in charge of it. The military just plays the cards they are dealt. And the dealers love to gamble with everyone's lives but their own.

Wars are bad indeed, but you have to realize that there are some bad people in the world. The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing. Without the good guys also having and using their militaries as necessary the likes of Hitler would go unchallenged. Where would the world be today if the U.S. had not had the military to defeat the Nazis in WWII?

You might as well ask whether everyone thinks America needs police officers. Without someone keeping order, internal and external, we invite evil men to exert their evil will upon us. This is the challenge of government.

The challenge of democracy is to try to prevent evil men from taking the reins of government. That's why many of our founding fathers favored educating the electorate. An educated electorate can be a powerful tool in the hands of the people, and can be the only thing standing between us and either anarchy or fascism.

We are left with these, Freedom, Security, and Peace. Each worthy pursuits, but there is a proper order: Freedom, Security, and then Peace.

America wouldn't need a military if everyone in the world just wanted peace. This is not the case, however unfortunately it may be. There will always be a need for a military because only the dead have seen the end of war.

America needs a military. Too many people hate us. It's part of being responsible as a country who wants to protect us. Peaceful negotiations don't always work, and never work with a bullying country if you don't have an army to back you up. Besides, there are too many injustices in this world that need to be handled militarily since speaking nicely didn't work. Hitler walked right into countries that didn't have armies to guard their borders.

And you had the nerve to ask this on Veterans Day. Thank your local veteran for allowing you to even entertain this thought in a free country.

Honey, I wish I could agree with you but unfortunately everyone here is right. Maybe some day...

Here's what I don't get: People proclaiming to be Christian promote and go to war while Jesus was just about as peaceful as anyone could imagine.

So stop by the local church and ask for a show of hands "Who here believes in the death penalty?" When most of the hands go up, try to find one of them that can reconcile that belief with the New Testament.

Yeah, i disagree. Once in elementary shool i wanted to solve something peacefully and i got beat up. the point is, just because your peaceful doesnt mean your enemy is. Therefore be peaceful but also be capable of defending yourself.(this isnt a comment on our latest war, just common sense)

September 11 was an attack on the US and it was before Iraq, so was pearl harbor. I cant believe you don't know this!

That idea only works if everyone else in the world wants to solve things peacefully. That is, if they have weapons and we don't, they'll all be very nice to us.

Reality check - even with a military, bad folks out there are attacking us. It is our military that is the main problem-solver of the UN when they are finally forced to admit that diplomacy only works if both sides genuinely want to work things out through discussion. It is our military that prevents the rise of another Hitler.

America and every countries in this world should has their own military to protect the sovereignty of the county. The more important thing is how we used military functions to ensure peace and stability of the world. I do agree that military should not be used to invade the sovereignty of other countries.

If the USA did not have a military, some other country would invade and take it over. Then it would have their military. So not having a military is not an option.

However, I do not believe the military necessarily must be controlled by the government. America's first military was citizen militia, so it is possible to have an entirely private military.
