Really now, what I'm asking for, are a person or persons, or events of any kind whose experience of a tragedy of any kind, which so profoundly saddend you, that you were almost paralyzed with sorrow.

It can be something that happened to you personally, to some one you know or know of, an actual historical event, an action or scene from a play or film, involve one individual or thousands.

The important thing is, that it really effected you to such an extent, that you can honestly say it was by far, the most profoundly saddest experience of you life.

Please, proceed.

The history is full of really tragic events. And the above mentioned clearly deserved to be mentioned among them. But if I was asked about the most awful, the answer would be clear - WW2. 72 million people dead (most of them civilians), villages and cities burnt down to the ground, the whole countries devastated and many millions of lives destroyed during 6 years, even USA at the other end of the world could feel that.

October 21, 1966. Aberfan, South Wales. A whole generation were almost wiped out when a landslide of mud and debris engulfed a school, farms and houses. A coal tip on the mountain above the village moved and took just five minutes to reach the village. 116 children died, as did 28 adults. Numerically, it may not have been worst distaster of all time, but surely there cannot be a more tragic loss than that of a child. In this case, several families lost their children.

I would have to say the greatest tragedy in human existence is still being perpetuated. Africa. Never a year goes by that there is not death, famine, pestilence and war. It truly is a playground for the horsemen of the apocalypse, if you believe in that sort of thing. I don't. But I do believe it could be solved. Enough of this, 'You can give a man food and it'll feed him for a week. Teach a man to feed himself it'll last a lifetime.' Teach them how to farm? They know how to farm, they've been doing it for thousands of years. The real trick is staying alive long enough to reap a decent harvest. Once upon a long ago all a farmer had to worry about was the occasional tribal conflict and lions. The introduction of the AK-47 and evil men in positions of power that treat genocide as a competitive sport may have to be addressed.

How is it a tragedy? Really? You've never heard of Romeo and Juliet? There are big problems here. How about everything was against them...or how about how...they both died in the end due to one big misunderstanding?

There are several tragedies that happened throughout history and in my life.

The tragedy of 9/11 occurred when I was experiencing a crisis of faith. Fortunately, I recovered and I still have my faith in God.

The loss of my two grandparents saddened me; they were the only grandparents to whom I was very, very close. Although they died 10 and a half years apart, it still depresses me. When my grandma died when I was 14, I actually took it quite well but now I really miss her because I've accomplished so much and I want her to be proud of what I've done so far (got a college degree and a nice job).

About a year and a half later, my grandpa (her husband) suddenly had a massive stroke and died a few weeks later (we realized that he wasn't going to get any better so the doctor "pulled the plug"). I cried the day he died. It was horrible. It was at a time when I was already feeling depressed and frustrated. Even now when I think about them, I feel like I need to start crying.

Hear me out on this one...

Jesus is the greatest tragedy of all time. While I am a Catholic and beleive in JC, one does not have to beleive in Him to agree with me with respect to your question. Your questions has two elements.
- Greatest
- Tragedy

It is not disputed that Jesus of Nazareth existed in real life. Only his diety is disputed. He really did die on the cross so by definition, an innocent executed is a tragedy. It is the greatest tragedy becasue of the eventual effect that act had on the rest of human history since. The number of lives that have been lost (more tragedy) since the death of JC is inumberable. At the very core of the hollicaust, one could say that Hitler exterminated the Jews becasue of the death of Jesus. Had Jesus not been put to death (again, all diety comments aside) the path of the world would have been so far in another direction that it is difficult to comprehend.

It is really difficult to think of another tragedy that has had a bigger effect on human history than that of the death of JC.

In terms of its effect on me, and also on the rest of the world, I would have to say the assassination of John F. Kennedy. We were innocent in those days; we didn't expect such things. That's why he was riding in an open convertible. When I heard the news, it was as if one of my family had died. And the whole country, perhaps much of the world, felt like that.

Dunblane - the thought of all those innocents dying needlessly in a place where they should have been safe still brings tears to my eyes. My son was 10 at the time, and at school obviously, so it really hit home.

when my dad was killed in an accident and for a long time i blamed myself for it. my dad was in his late 70's and not in good health and i took him everywhere and one morning i didn't feel well so i wanted to wait till after lunch and while i was cooking breakfast i got the phone call that he had been in an accident, so i took off and by the time i arrived at the hospital it was too late. but another bad thing was the way i was told, his sister looked at me and just blurted out he's dead that's how i was told.. i'm diabetic and when i get under stress it causes my blood sugar to go up so i then had to go to the emergency room and they had to keep giving me medicine until they got my blood sugar down. so that was a bad trip twice i guess you could say
