'Gauge' is usually used when refering to the width or thickness of something as in wire, cable, etc. It is also used when referring to the distance between the rails of a railway (railroad). Different countries have different 'gauges' - ie the distance between the tracks varies. This is a particular problem for trains travelling in Europe between 'western' Europe and ex-Soviet Union countries (which use a wider gauge). The trains' bodies have to be lifted off the running gear, new running gear fitted and the train lowered again before the trains can continue their journey.
