Dian Fossey was an American Zoologist who was dedicated in studying several gorilla groups in the mountains of Rwanda. She emerged as a strong defender and protector of the gorillas as she believed life of gorillas needs to be valued. All her gorilla protection efforts led to her demise when she was brutally murdered in 1985.

Her interest with gorillas sparkled after reading a book about gorillas by George Schaller. She took a bank loan to vae a 6 weeks trip to Africa where she worked temporarily in an area of hominid fossils in Tanzania under Dr. Louis Leakey. She also had a trip to Zaire and had an actual encounter of mountain gorillas.

In 1967, she founded the Karisoke Research Center( a remote rain-forest camp nestled in the Virunga Mountains in Ruhengeri province, Rwanda) after an encouragement of Dr. Louis Leakey to study gorillas in the wild as an experiment.

She became famous and an international celebrity after few years. A massive publicity to her cause of saving the mountain gorilla from extinction was widely spread. She strongly supported "active conservation"(anti-poaching patrols and preservation of natural habitat) and opposed the "theoretical conservation," which includes the promotion of tourism. She was also strongly opposed to zoos. She authored the book "Gorillas in the Mist".

Her remains was interred in gorilla graveyard she had constructed for her dead gorilla friends.

Taken from wikipedia:

Dian Fossey (January 16, 1932 – December 27, 1985) was an American Zoologist who completed an extended study of several gorilla groups. She observed them daily for years in the mountain forests of Rwanda, initially encouraged to work there by famous paleontologist Louis Leakey.

Her work is somewhat similar to Jane Goodall's work with chimpanzees.
