Saving Private Ryan is based on a compilation of real life rescues during WWII of surviving sons, including Patton's nephew. The basis of where they went is based on the rescue at Hommelburg by 3rd Squadron, 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment, with a fictional Ryan son being the last surviving son, but it was not the only time or occassion that a raid was based on saving the last heir. The rule still exists today.

its based on a true story, about 4 brothers that served on the USS Arizona that was attacked during Perl Harbor and sunk and all 4 brothers died. That's why the US military no longer lets brothers if serve in the military in the same unit anymore and if your an only/last son you can not be drafted or join. The 4 brothers that passed were the only sons and in the family.
