when is it to late to plant a tree in central new jersey?

You can plant until the ground freezes. If you get it in the ground now, deep watering will still warm the roots and cause them to aclimatize to your locale. Then mulch--but keep it at least 7" to 12" away from the trunk in order to avoid rot and fungal growth. That will also keep your soil warmer.

Fall or very early spring is always the best time to plant while the trees are dormant. Fall actually gives them a better chance for root growth during the winter months that way they are well established for spring. Plant before the ground hardens now and use root hormone.

through the end of march is the best time to plant any tree
