2 satellites will tell you your location on Earth.
3 satellites will tell your location and altitude
More than 3 satellites will cause your error rate to get smaller and smaller causing your accuracy to be better.

3 satellites might give you a 10 meter accuracy but more than that will cause to accuracy to get better ie; 4 meters, 3 meters and even down to 2 meters.

It only takes two satellites to tell where you are.

For a positive confirmation and information on your altitude, you need three satellites.
