the electric/gas company switched the gas water heaters out for our entire apartement/townhouse community this past year, and put in these new, smaller, and less-efficient ones. The old ones held 60 gallons of water, and used a norml amount of gas and electric to run them, but these new ones are only 40 gallons, and cost twice as much to run. On the EnergyStar yellow label, this new one's about a quarter inch from the WORST POSSIBLE RATING. Even in the summer, the gas bill doubled, and this winter's going to SUCK, but we can't change it out because we rent. Do the water heater insulation wraps work at all, or are we just screwed?

I'm suprised that new gas water heaters would be less efficient since most new water heaters are well insulated internally. Just to be sure, they sell insulated foil wraps that are made of fiberglass that do help conserve heat. Most importantly, you should use fiberglass pipe insulation on the pipes that lead out of the water heater upstairs. Simply covering these pipes will help you save on your energy bill. Remember that these expenses are usually tax deductable on your tax-returns.

If the outside of the hot water heater feels warm you are wasting power, an insulation wrap would help.
The swap of the water heaters sounds very strange.

Since the Gas/ electric company does not own the water heaters I doubt they switched them out- YOUR LANDLORD
DID since he owns them- he choose 40 gallon tanks and less effecient ones because they are cheaper- he i shte chealp a__ guy whom to talk too...the electric comapny acutally wants you to have amore effecient one because it helps them meet gov't pollution regulations without haveing to swpend billions upgrading to generate new power at new more pollution snenistive plants that nobody wnts and or will allow them to build- they mak emore by you using less- seems counterintiuitive but hink about your diriving if someon was goin to charge you an extra dollar a mile you would a. drove less or go sepnd 50000 on a new car?

Your going to have to conserve water as best you can. In the meantime complain like heck about it. Sounds to me like someone got a deal and, it wasn't you.

It's not illegal, they're just greedy idiots, and I think it's possible for you to complain.
