So my quilt has 7 inch squares. 5 of my squares, I want to be made up of 4 smaller ones and the finished square needs to be 7 in. with a 1/4 seam, how big should the four smaller squares be? And would this be easier to do if I decided to make my squares all 6 in? and if so, then what would the smaller squares need to be for a 6 in final square?

I need my smaller 4-square square to be exactly 7 in when finished, to match my other 7 inch squares.

it will be 3 3/4" squares sewn with a scant 1/4 seam...4 of them will make a 7 inch block.

If you want to end up with 7" squares when you are done sewing everything together, you will need to make a 7 1/2" squares to allow for seam allowances.

If you have 7 1/2 inch square, you need to cut the 4 smaller squares 4 1/4 inch squares (allowing for 1/4 inch seam allowances).

If you have just 7 inch squares before you sew them together, the 4 smaller squares need to be 4 inch squares.

Here is how I figured this out. I used a piece of paper. I measured the size of the final square. Then I folded it in half both directions and measured from the edge of the paper to the fold and added 1/2 inch to include the 1/4 inch seam allowances.

Hope this helps.

You don't have to change it. If your small squares are cut exactly 4 inches and you use a quarter inch seam, then your big square will come out to 7 inches with a quarter inch seam all around.

If you want 7 inches with no additional seam allowance, then cut the smaller squares at 3 and 3 quarters of an inch. When sewn together, the final square will be exactly 7.

7 divided by 4 is 1 and three quarters. If you have quarter-inch seams, then cut out your squares 2-and-a-quarter each. A six-inch square finished needs 1-and-a half-inch squares (plus seams they would be 2").
