The Presidential Preference Election is held on the first tuesday of November in 2008. On that day the people will cast their ballots, indicating their preference for electors pledged to candidates for President and Vice President. In December the members of the Electoral College who were awarded certificates of ascertainment by their states' governors will meet in their respective state capitals and cast their ballots for President and Vice President. There are fifty states and the District of Columbia which can cast electoral votes. Of those 51 jurisdictions, 26 do not have "faithful elector" laws which bind the members of the Electoral College to cast their ballots in agreement with that cast by the voters in the previous month.
