i was just strolling through yahoo answers when i noticed how the posters here are just ripping each others throats for being (democrat/republican). its getting nasty here.
since i only came of age around 9/11 i was wondering, for those who have been around for more than my measly 22 years, have you ever seen the U.S. so divided when it comes to politics, or was it worst in your opinions during other eras such as watergate or reagan, or w/e.

During the 60's for starters, Vietnam, civil rights......

This is nothing compared to that.

Oh and that whole Civil War...............

Watergate? Reagan? That is nothing.

The politics in Washington is divided and partisan but the people are not, and in fact they are more apathetic than at any time I can remember. Being equally divided is not the same as being deeply divided. Although almost 2 out of 3 people say they do not support the war when asked, there is no real anti war movement or demonstrations like those that occurred in the 60's. The only issue that arouses any real passion is abortion, and the passion is all on the pro life side. For the most part most people just tune out politics and go on with their life. I think the reason that partisan rhetoric has gotten so shrill is because they are desperately trying to get the publics attention.

Dude during Vietnam the American public was eating its self alive.
The police weren't the only ones at riots and such beating hell out of people.
And the Civil rights movement Christ all mighty you had blacks demanding to be treated equally and some whites and other races standing with them. Then you might have militant blacks wanting some where from all whites to just leave them completely alone to others that wanted to wipe US out. Then on the other side you have whites with the some divisions.

I've been around 53 years now and that was all happening as I was growing up.

It did make life interesting because when you met somebody of another race you might just throw down and party together or you could be in for one hell of a fight.

Our nation survived this and before that we even had the War of Northern Aggression and here we are after all these years a stronger better place for the hell we put each other through.

Yea, try 2000.

Country was pretty much divided equally then.

People tend to think politics has never been this way before,

When it has been this way, throughout american history.

We have had congressmen shoot at each other before.

How divided to you think america was in 1996, when for the first time in over 40 years, the public kicked the democrats out of congress and gave control to republicans .

It's same ole, same ole.

I think it has always been this way. Some times are worse than others. Right now it is pretty bad, but nowhere near as bad as it was in the 60's...

I think america is more divided now more than ever. Everyone has so many views on important issues and people are trying so hard to persuade ewach other to vote for obame or hilary. People are becoming so offset and now our country is in such shambles.
