Did people really drop a hammer before the went fast or something. Maybe they dropped a hammer on the horses they were riding. If I was a horse and someone was about to drop a hammer on my head I'd certainly bolt.

The hammer of a gun. A revolver type gun that cowboys used not the automatic ones that cops and stuff use now.

When the gun is ready, the hammer is pulled back. Squeeze the trigger and down drops the hammer onto the cartridge - boom!

I guess a bullet goes pretty fast so.

Drop the hammer refers to the old flintlock rifle used in the Civil(Un civil) war. Drop the hammer is three words. When the order to fire was about to be given, the officer of the group instead of saying "one" "two" "three", would slowly say "Drop" "The" "Hammer", and the soldiers would fire their rifles. The officer would usually wait until he could see the "whites of the enemy eyes, before giving the order.
