i am considering pre-med and was confused by some of the requirements. some just states that they need 1 year of this and that. but the other said that they need 1 year of college this and college that. so do you need a bachelor or something before going pre-med or you just go to pre-med?

Pre-med isn't a major. It's just a track offered during college, which only means that you are taking the pre-required courses for applications to medical school.

You don't need to do anything prior to it. When you go to college, you can just go to your registrar's office (or the dean's, it depends) and ask them to designate you as pre-med. You can major in whatever you want while doing pre-med. Major does NOT matter in applying to medical school, as long as you have the pre-requisites completed.

To add to the last answer: You don't technically need a bachelor's degree to enter medical school, but I would say that more than 99% of medical students have one. It's sort of an unwritten rule.

AMCAS requires entering medical students to have at least 90 hrs of credit at an accredited US university/college. But like I said, 99% of us complete a bachelor's prior to entering. You apply during your junior or senior year of college.

In other words, it's NOT true that you can only take the pre-reqs and be okay, because the pre-reqs by themselves don't even add up to at least 90 hours of credit.

I'm currently a medical student, so I've already gone through the application process.

http://forums.studentdoctor.net is a great resource. Go to the Pre-Allopathic (pre-MD) forum. If you register you can ask questions (it's free, dont' worry). That forum was my best adviser through the whole process.

Good luck.

I thought that "pre-med" was a program given by a college offering a bachelors degree. Just like biology or chemistry...

I'm talking about US colleges...

John hopkins college is a college that furnish scientific college and undergraduate training. if your admitted to john hopkins, your no longer admitted to their med college yet. You in there undergraduate college. inspite of the undeniable fact that it will enhance you possibility of stepping into John hopkin med college in case you went there for undergraduate college.

to go to medical school, you don't need a bachelor's degree, you just have to fulfill all of their requirements. so if you've taken all of the required college classes but don't have a bachelor's degree, you can still go to medical school if your GPA and MCAT scores are high enough.

the term 'pre-med' is just a general term for college students who want to go to med school. you can be 'pre-med', but still major in physiology, or anatomy, or whatever you want in your undergraduate education.
basically, you go to an undergraduate college to take the classes that are required for medical school. but if you have all of the classes and haven't finished undergrad, you can still go to medical school if you're accepted and not graduate undergrad.
