Like many have said, a public elementary school teacher is paid a salary not hourly. Now keep in mind if a starting elementary teacher is paid about $40,000 a year and works 40 weeks a year at 60 hours a week (possibly even more) then the hourly wage would be about $16.67 an hour.

I've been teaching 10 years now and make $65,000 a year and still easily work 60+ hours a week. Keep in mind also live in a very expensive area (San Francisco Bay Area so it's all relative).

It's really hard to say, because every teacher really works different hours. We get paid a salary, and we are solely responsible for all the planning and preparation OUTSIDE of normal classroom hours. Some teachers work practically all night long, and we don't get paid overtime for that. Some teachers manage to get all their planning done in an hour. It all depends on the individual.
You should ask a few different teachers you know. Ask what is a normal salary for a teacher in the area, and ask them how many hours do they personally work after school. Then you can do the math to get an idea of the range you're looking for.

Teachers usually get paid a monthly or annual salary as opposed to an hourly wage, and the actual amounts vary from place to place.

I don't know which country you're writing from, but I think teachers are better paid in Canada than in the US.

Sometimes you can get extra in an isolated location such as Alaska or Yukon Territory.

I'd suggest that you look at an area where you'd like to work, and just ask the local school district office.

They don't generally get paid an hourly wage. They're paid a salary. It depends on where you live, but if you go to salary.com, you can find out the average yearly salary in your area, and break it down by the hour. Where I live, the average for a starting early-childhood teacher in public school is 30-40 k/year.

In my zip code, it's around $24/hour. Teaching is generally a salaried position, though. Go to www.salary.com for information for your location.
