Well first find the absolute increase, which is simply the difference between the two:

30,989,000 - 26,650,000 = 4,339,000

Now, what percentage of 26,650,000 is 4,339,000? Well thats simple:

4,339,000 / 26,650,000 = 0.1628 = 16.28%

Therefore, from 1996 to 1997, the increase was 16.28%

In problems like these, you must first subtract (find the difference between the two numbers).

Then take that number (just over 4.3 million) and divide that by the number you are starting with (in this case, the 1996 number or 26.65 million).

This division is a way of creating a fraction (or the percent increase).

The increase was 4,339,000

Compared to the original amount you have:
4,339,000 / 26,650,000 = 0.162814259

This is an increase of 16.28%

It asked for percent *increase* not just absolute percent..

one million. enable S be a set such that for each ingredient x of S there exists a special ingredient x' of S. 2. there is an ingredient in S, we will call it one million, such that for each ingredient x of S, one million isn't equivalent to x'. 3. If x and y are components of S such that x' = y', then x = y. 4. If M is any subset of S such that one million is an ingredient of M, and for each ingredient x of M, the ingredient x' is likewise an ingredient of M, then M = S. basically as a rely of notation, we write one million' = 2, 2' = 3, etc. We define addition in S as follows: (a1) x + one million = x' (a2) x + y' = (x + y)' The ingredient x + y is named the sum of x and y. Now to coach that one million + one million = 2. From (a1), with x = one million, we see that one million + one million = one million' = 2.

% increase
= [ (30,989,000 - 26,650,000) / (26,650,000) ] * 100
= 16.28.
