I used to be really, REALLY into mathematics but now I hate it. I blame my problems on a combination of overwork, psychological problems and the inherant difficulty of abstract mathematics. What about yall?

I think that, when we are young and trying to figure out what we want to do with our lives, we usually pick something that we have some sort of interest in. We figure that it will bring joy and fulfillment to our lives. We set the bar for career satisfaction kind of high. We don't think, "Well, it'll be kind of dull, but it'll pay the bills." Reality is often not as exciting as that initial expectation.

Also, as we age, WE change. We move on to different stages in life. According to Erik Erikson, we focus more on being productive when we're in our early adulthood and more on being proud of what we've produced when we're in our later adulthood. We have very different expectations of our job in those different stages.

Finally, some things are just more fun when you GET to do them rather than when you HAVE to do them. That is why some people find that turning their hobby into their job is not as enjoyable as they had thought it would be.
