the problem is that you are liable if the item turns out to be forged, stolen, or simply completely fake. That might take weeks to months to discover. and the information is negative -- you aren't informed if/when everything goes right but will be dunned weeks to months later if things aren't right.

don't take checks from people you don't know and have done business with before. if you're new to international trade, insist on wire transfers and/or trade acceptances. Ask your banker for details.

Never, NEVER ever assume that such a check has cleared and send part of the money on to anyone. That's how a well known scam works and you'll lose big time.

It can take approximately anywhere from 30-45 days. Unless, the UK system is slower... it should be the same. I know that if you deposit a foreign item into a U.S bank, it takes about that timeframe for it to clear the foreign bank. Hope it helps! I work in a bank, thats how I know
