I have the moon cup menstrual cup from the UK and I haven't tried it yet because I haven't gotten my period back after giving birth to my baby almost 10 months ago.

Who has tried one of the cups and does it hurt at all? What were your experiences with it? Ease of use, techniques used, ect? Has anyone experienced shorter periods as a result of using a cup? Anything else I should know about them?

About the cups for people who've never heard of them...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Menstrual_cup
I would search google if I were you.
From my search I found that the moon cup UK and the Lunette were given the best reviews because of comfort, size and ease of use.
I haven't used one yet but I think that from what I've heard they are way better than tampons. Tampons have possible health risks while the cup has never had any health risks related to it. And you don't have to empty the cup all that often from what I have read too, maybe 2 or 3 times a day average. All cups are reusable except for the instead which I read is not normally found comfortable to use anyway.

I use the Diva cup. I've used it since last October.

I have had nothing but positive experiences with it. (No spotting or leakage) I feel it has a steep learning curve to learn to properly insert it. It says to insert the cup with the "U" shape pointing up. I have found that for my body it is easier with the "U" down. You can practice now, even before your period comes back. That is one of the "pros" of having a cup. Just make sure it is wet (water is fine) when you practice. No, my periods are the same length. Read the instructions for proper use and care of the cup and everything should be fine.

On a scientific note: It was interesting to me to see what my menstrual blood looked like in its pure form. (IE - not on a pad or tampon) It was also good to finally find out how much blood I pass per period. Before I had to guess, now I have hard numbers.

Edit - to Just Me - Cups have been around since the 1930's. Don't feel bad, I didn't know about them either. I only learned about them last year and from this forum too! Links to the different types of cups to choose from.

I even have used the Keeper for greater or less 14 years now - i'm on my 2d one. My first cup lasted approximately 10 years. i'm unable to think of why every person might use pads or tampons. the assumption of the bleached cotton sitting on the partitions of my vagina or a pad up against my physique soaked in blood and tissue disgusts me. The cups are safer, greater environmentally friendly, and lots much less high priced. i might by no capacity supply up my Keeper.

You wouldn't experience shorter periods just by changing to a cup. Your period comes from inside the uterus and whether you use a cup, tampon or pad is not going to change the lining of your uterus. I use the softcup and like it. It took a couple times to get use to it and I wear a small pad in case of leaks but it doesn't hurt. I usually wear latex gloves (you can get a box at a general supermarket or place like walmart) and wear them when changing it since it can get messy and it's just easier for cleanup.
