Yes. You should definately go in and make sure it's nothing that can be passed or affect your baby. Can you feed formula for now and pump your milk? You not only want to be sure its safe for your baby but that your baby is getting the nutrients they need also.

YES - You should go to an Urgent Care center or the ER. A breast infection should not be messed with. Not only can it get bad fast but you could get very sick. If you have a fever and your breast is red/sore/warm you should most definately seek medical attention NOW. Take your baby with you if you can - if it's a plugged duct the nursing will help.

I've had mastitis five times (all within 4 months) My saving grace was a hospital pump. I haven't had it since then. I did get an abscess around 8 cm and it was this hard lump. It's very obvious if you are going to get an abscess from mastitis. I was throwing up like crazy (the poor people in the breast clinic didn't know what to do with me.) I was actually taking antibiotics and they weren't working. I got sicker and sicker. I thought I was going to die. I was glad my mother let me stay the night (husband wasn't much help) and she took care of the baby. I was so sick I couldn't even hold her. However, once we got antibiotics that worked, the mastitis slowly went away but the lump stayed with me for weeks. The doctor said that since the mastitis was so bad that it was expected to continue to have a lump for awhile. It also continued to hurt for awhile. If you are sick still and are on antibiotics, go to an urgent care or the doctors, it might be the same issue I had were the antibiotics were ineffective. If it's just soreness, it's fairly normal. I've surprised your prenatal OB has cut you off, I was still calling them well after the baby was born.

I think it's up to you. I've had the same thing, decided to wait until morning, and felt better the next day without going to the doctor. I took some Tylenol, kept the breast as drained as possible, applied a warm, moist washcloth regularly. Also massage the area. If you just don't think you can wait for morning, I see nothing wrong with going to the ER so you can start some antibiotics for it. Also, your baby can still breastfeed. The infection does not affect the milk. Keeping the breast as empty as possible is essential. If it hurts too much to nurse you can pump.

It is definitely worth going to an urgent care or ER to get antibiotics. If you wait too long you could end up in the hospital on IV antibiotics. Either way it's always better to be safe than sorry! Good luck!

Call your phsycians office, there is always someone there to answer emergency calls, especially OB offices. Even on holidays. Tell them you have mastitis and ask if they can call in a pain reliever and antibiotic to your pharmacy. If you aren't comfortable diagnosing yourself (sounds like you do have mastitis) just describe your symptoms, and they will call you in a prescription. You don't need to go to the ER for mastitis! Just drink lots of water, and continue to nurse on the infected side (yes you can do that, infact it is highly encouraged) until you get the medicine you need. Good luck

If you are currently breast feeding and you are running a fever and have an infection around your areloa, you should go to a doctor as soon as possible. You don't want to take the risk of your child getting the infection from you.

you can try some home remedies... not all cases of mastitis need an antibiotic...

here's some help:
http://www.kellymom.com/bf/concerns/mom/mastitis.html#usualtreatment

""When you have mastitis...
Talk to your DR about starting antibiotics immediately if:

-Mastitis is in both breasts.
-Baby is less than 2 weeks old, or
you have recently been in the hospital.
-You have broken skin on the nipple
with obvious signs of infection.
-Blood/pus is present in milk.
-Red streaking is present.
-Your temperature increases suddenly.
-Symptoms are sudden and severe""

Call your OB/GYN. They should have an answering service and they will have the doctor call you back. I would not breastfeed until you get a call back from the doctor. Get formula because the baby still has to eat.
