Kia, Hyundai, suzuki are offering 7 year/ 100000 mile warranties. What is the difference? Do American car companies fear standing behind their product for the long run?

actually, i think it was chevrolet that just offered a full LIFETIME warranty for the powertrain. that happened like this summer.

Those companies have to offer those warranties to make sales. If are going to buy the car anyway, then that is good. And you are right the US car companies were slow to use extended warranties as an incentive.
Your assumptions related to confidence in the product impacting the warranty do not seem to hold true. Acura has a 6 year 70,000 mile limited powertrain warranty, less than Kia, and we know an Acura is more reliable than a Kia.
