It's simply because Yankees fans have a hard time accepting the fact that the tide has turned to the Red Sox as best team in baseball.
They are likely to mention something about how many more world series' they have won since 1918 than the Red Sox have. The sad thing is that the Yankees haven't won a championship yet this millenium. Stop living in the past Yankees fans. Your days as baseball's best team is over.

Because the Boston and New York have really heated rivalries in pretty much every sport including baseball. It's like UGA and GT, White Sox and Chicago Cubs, or Auburn and Alabama. They just hate each other because they are close, in the same division, rich, and a lot of times about equally talented

It's because everyone in Sox nation is freaking out over a couple of championships. The Yankees/Sox rival is perhaps the most heated in all of sports. We get so pissed because we've got 26 rings and the BoSox are acting like their the best team baseball has ever seen. GO YANKEES!!!!!!!!!!!

Well it all goes back to the deal of Babe Ruth. For 86 years the RedSox had a curse on them for the trade. Then i n 2004 we came back from 3-0 down to beat them in a best of seven series. The Redsox and Yankees is the best rivalry in sports. As much as Yankee fans hate to hear about Redsox nation we hate to hear about the 27 World Series titles that they have. To Quote the Fenway faithful YANKEES SUCK.

"1918" chant -- revoked.

"It'll be another 86 years!" taunt -- overridden.

Entire concept of tribal identity for the fan base, "Red Sox Nation" (something I've never been much behind), thought of first.

Got the best player in baseball and STILL couldn't win.

The Greatest Choke In Baseball History.

No trophies this millennium.

It builds up. The easy release of harassment just isn't there lately. Tempers get short.

Then the YANKEES got so annoyed they had to counter with (the clearly overcompensating) YANKEES UNIVERSE.

I know, I laughed too.
