People in North India call this festival as Diwali
and it is known as Deepavali in Tamilnadu (South India)

deepavali is old fashioned but it means the same thing as diwali.

Both words mean the same.
Diwa/Diya / Deep , all mean Lamps.

Lamps mean lights.
It is a Festival of lights.
It was over on 9th Nov 2007.
