Does it really need it's own chome pipe to function better? Can't I just put a high flow round air filter where the huge air flow box (which houses the square paper filter) is now AND get the same kind of results if I weren't to replace the current pipe with a new chrome one? I ask because it seems to be more money and time consuming to replace the pipe with a different one, when the stock one will probably work the anyway

Well consider your options, if this your only one go for it. Get a good filter, because air intake is mainly designed for performance at higher rpm's. You will be taking in more air at those rpms, resulting in better performance.

It'll work lol. But why are you looking to do this? Are you an enthusiast? Or did you just hear that putting a conical filter on there with give you monster HP gains? If you're going to upgrade your intake system and let your little over-worked 4 banger breath better, go all the way. Do some research though, spend the money and get a quality name brand piece. But generally, yes, the inside on an aluminum tube is much smoother and with flow a little better than stock. Good luck.
