just tell them... or do it in a cute way - what's the big deal? if you were having sex and neither one is fixed then it's to be expected... he had a part in it too, so don't feel like it's your fault...

Most of America's children are unexpected...they're only expected if you're trying to get pregnant in my experience.
Personally I'd ship the kids off to someplace safe: friends, relatives or a babysitter. Make my husband a nice dinner and announce the family's new population growth.
I'd start asking the kids if they were to get a brother or sister which one they'd prefer.
In the interim you can all be kept guessing which it will be unless you have twins again of different sexes. In that case, you're all bound to get what you want in the sex category.

You sound worried that your husband might be upset about the unplanned pregnancy. If that is the case, just tell him in a casual setting. If you are excited about the pregnancy and want to surprise him, get a shirt that says "Baby on board" and wear a jacket over it and when you are talking to him take the jacket off and he will not be expecting that. Or get two shirts that say "Soon to be big brothers/sisters" and put them on your children.

I would just tell him straight out. If your husband is like my husband, he doesn't like unexpected news to be "all dolled up" or have any kind of drumroll-he just wants it straight from the hip because it's easier for him to process that way....but that's just what would make it easier for my husband.
As for how to tell your kids, I wouldn't tell them straight out until you start showing (so that they can "see" the baby). Before that though, I would recommend bringing up the idea of a new baby. Start pointing out babies in the store, and talking about how much *FUN* it would be to have a baby of their very own. That's what we did with our son. Then one day after lots of talking about it, he told us that he wanted a baby of his very own and we just looked at him and said "Okay! She'll be here in no time!" So not only was he not traumatized, he was actually excited to be getting something he asked for!
However you tell your family, I'm sure they'll be excited. New babies (even unexpected ones) are such a blessing!

How did you tell him about the three-year-olds? A baby is a blessing. Just announce it like you've won ten thousand dollars and you don't have to pay taxes on it.

Tell him like an adult. Ignore the first two answers. They aren't playing with a full deck.

Put a big smile on your face and say, "Honey, you'd better sit down...I've got something to tell you..."
Congratulations!
Our third is due in 3.5 weeks...we weren't planning on him right now either, but we're sure happy he's coming!!
