They couldn't have been killed as stated, there would have been some evidence of that. They were probably defeated down to a man and simply gave up to the locals, taken in by them and scattered as slaves, wives and children that were lost to disease. This would be normal behavior.

I think some of them married the Meherrin Indians right here in North Eastern North Carolina. Some of them have pure white skins. It is a fully working tribe, and they have real Pow Wows every fall. Of course, it is a money-making business now. You can buy beautiful jewelry and leather things that the Tribe actually made.
Some say they went on down to Georgia near Claxton where there is a grave stone with Croatan carved in it. Grams

I'm sort of divided between the notion that the locals mopped them up, and that they built boats and went searching for a better place to live, perishing at sea somewhere further up the coast.

But then, no one really knows.

I think most of them starved. The rest went to the mainland to find food, where most or all of them were killed. Some may have been absorbed by local peoples.
