A mechanic did who did work on my car originally told me he would charge me $250 to replace blown head gasket (his parts cost & minimal labor because he was supposed to be a friend) now wants $850+ for services. I paid him $450 for services and I got my car back but now he is trying get more money. . The invoice he presented appears to have overpriced parts and double charged labor. I told him I would not pay anymore money because I feel he is overcharging me because he got mad at me. He replied that he would put a lien sale on my car and hung up on me. Can he do that??

And why would he keep my insurance card and registration?

My guess is the $250 was for parts only and there was proberbly a miss understanding between the two of you. Always get a written quote before work starts and a new written quote if the price changes due to unforseen things once the job has started

He can take you to court and probably win. However, chances are slim, he can make more money by working than he would win.

Mechanic liens are done before you get the car back. Just blow him off. Get a new reg and proof of insurance before you get stopped.

take your invoice to another mechanic and let him check the invoice to see if it sounds right, 850 for a head gasket doesnt sound too bad
