how do i get some of my ram(memory) to be used for my videocard memory?

i got a laptop and noticed that it has 1 gb of ram but its giving 300 to the video card (i asked my friend in cisco). how do i do this on my desktop pc? i have 2.50 gb of ram i want to give 500 mb there for having 2 bg left

Please help.

In general. the video card takes what it wants.

Sometime the amount is selectable in the BIOS. Check to see if this is the case on your desktop.
