For electric heat? Yes, I believe that. Call a heating contractor and have a gas furnace installed. It will pay for itself in just a few years.

What has changed since last winter?
New furnace? Maybe they did something wrong (see our story below)

Have you closed all the obvious areas where you could lose heat? (closed or installed storm windows, colsed off attic access doors, etc)

What type of heating do you have (gas, fuel oil, electric, other)?
When was it last serviced?

We had this problem (except it was with our A/C unit) a year ago. We had our heat pump (serves as both heating and cooling) replaced. When they installed the thermostat, they connected the aux heat (5000W) to heat up each time the A/C came on.

We had about 2 months of very high electric bills over the summer before we got to the root of it. It was much warmer last summer than the prior year, so it took a little time before we knew something was all fouled up.

Even with your windows and doors open and it being zero outside, your bill is way too high assuming it is for one month. I have an all electric home (heat pump), I average $150 a month for heat and A/C. My house is two story, about 2400 square feet.

First query the gas company do that now
then if the bill is right ring a gas fitter to do a test of the system to find where there may be a leak

OMG that is horrible -- what kind of heat do you have? You definitely need to insulating. We heat by wood and I thought $800 for the entire season was bad.

I recieve a $1500 gas bill once because someone misread my meter. I would check with your utility company and see if there was a mistake. It can't be cold enough to cost that much yet.

maybe you need more insulation in your attic.
Probably the wiring isn"t large enough to carry the extra load
and causing the heater to run longer,Which is very dangerous,
Over loads can cause a fire.
