I am Canadian and never heard of it and I pay close attention to world politics. Our system has flaws and corruption but none want to switch to your system. We actually hope you eventually switch to give us a reason and maybe example to improve it.

BTW I don't think the US is ready for it now with all the debt and overspending but maybe in the future.

Lizzy-tish, yes there are certain politicians who do want an American style because of the profits to be made, but do you know any citizens. Email if you know a few and why they would like to switch.

I have never heard of one not one Canadian who has ever said they wanted an American styled health care
Nor have I ever heard one offer to give up their health card and pay for it out of their private savings or insurance
We constantly hear how lucky we are and how we should not complain it could be like it is in the US
I say lets stop comparing ourselves to nations worse off than ourselves and concentrate on nations that do better than we are doing
Instead of be gratefull your not in the US I want to hear why can't we be as efficient and cost effective as the Europeans
Instead of hearing how we could have the horrible patch work of mass transit that the US does I want to hear why we aren't doing as well as Germany
Instead of letting politicans off with fear mongering and so on lets make them answer why we do not have 200 km per hr trains like France and other Europeans and how the Netherlands deliver more with less on healh care
If the US is to be used as an example of health care or transit it is what not to do -

The only people I ever heard claim that the American system would be better were people employed by insurance companies. That includes such brilliant politicians as Mulroony and Ralph Klein.
The Canadian system actually costs far less for every person than the American private insurance system, and it manages to deliver better care.
It seems that the cost differences in the two systems are mostly caused by the high profits being taken by the American Insurance companies.
-------
As far as the thing about people going across borders for treatment it seems to be a two way thing. Canadian Hospitals get quite a few American patients having specialized procedures done too.
---------
I don't know where Poopsie is getting her information from. My Alberta Healthcare payment is $44.00 a month. Alberta is both the most privatized of the provinces and the most expensive. Ontario takes their health insurance premiums in the form of a tax and covers everybody the same. It makes more sense really. I would rather pay for somebody who is sick to be treated than to see a plague spreading because a sick person could not afford to see a doctor.

I've seen about 4 on here state that they are from Canada and they want universal health care gone because the quality went down and the waiting times went up.
Our system is not bad, it is usually the pioneer in medical advances (keep that in mind). It does need some tweaking, but I have faith that it is entirely possible to keep a free market health care system, make it affordable for all, and continue being a strong leader in health care provision. You don't need a large socialized subsidized government run health care system to make it effective. Ours is plenty effective, it just needs to be more affordable.

I have never heard of a Canadian, in Canada, wishing to switch. But I personally know 10 Canadians who moved to the US to get away from high Canadian taxes, in part due to Universal Health Care. By they way they are all employed, all have healthcare, and none of them would go back to Universal Health Care.

I just got an e-mail from a friend who has a friend in canada, he was saying how hillery wants to do what you do up there, and he says he pays55% of his salary to fund this universal health care and how awful it really is. thats its really just a health diagnosis system, and long waits for surgery etc. and how the obese people are a drain on the system. and immigrants get it all free. and if you have a problem, they (dr's) are always there with a pill (drugs) and thats about all you get, unless you get in line. and they even give druggies clean needles (at your expense) so they can slow down the disease's, sounds horrible to me. and I'm sure if hillary's pushing it, she would not be treated that way, were that to happen in the states, her and all the senators, etc. they would all get the best, while the rest of us pay pay pay, when I was up there a canadian told me she only pays 29.00 a month for everything, I pay 429.00 a month and I'm retired????? no wonder you don't want our system. its over priced, and the insurance companies run the USA. but I have to have it. in case of a sickness, the hospital bills could wipe me out!!!!!

Oh yeah I've heard of Canadians who want to switch to an Americanized type of health system, they're called Conservative Party Members and PM Stephen Harper as you know is a Conservative. So is Mike Harris , Ernie Eves, not sure about John Tory he really is more like the old Progressive Conservative Party. But just about every canadian Conservative/
Reform party member wants to privatize our system and make it more American. I, too, am Canadian, apparently you haven't paid as close attention as you think you have.

I have heard that some people want to make some of the Canadian health care system privatized. Can't say that I'm a fan of that idea.

Yes, why do you think more and more providences in canada, are making it legal for private health insurance to be offered again ?
Because people are fed up with the universial care.
