The Japanese expanded farther than they could realistically supply in Asia. Without extensive and continual naval resupply with air cover, their attempt to hold the islands in the Pacific Ocean - and even move into Burma and India - was doomed. Instead of acting the role of the "liberator" (the European colonies in Asia) - they became the Asian enslaver.
Hitler and the Nazis made the same mistake in Eastern Europe when fighting against the Soviet Union. They overextended their supply lines, and enslaved the peoples of Eastern Europe. That, and fighting against the combined forces of Australia, Britain, Canada, China, Dutch East Indies, India, New Zealand, Philippines, the Soviet Union, and the United States.

Germany thought they could defeat the European armies, reorganize the continent and be a superpower. They almost made it too. Yes, mistakes were made, but the 'major mistakes' are all logical ones. In WWI German forces annihilated Russian forces but had difficulty with the English and French. After whooping England and France in the early days of the war, it was logical to think that the German Army could defeat the USSR. As it turns out the fighting resolve of the Soviets and England was stronger than anyone could (or did) predict. In 1943 many thought that the "Allies" were loosing the war.
Japan was maneuvered into the conflict with the US and Europe. They had been fighting in China for years, and it wasn't until the US began to cut off the supply of natural resources that Japan attacked. Like Germany, Japan thought that they would be able to fight America to a diplomatic solution. Had the carrier been at Pearl on December 7th, it might have happened. But the fighting resolve of the Americans was stronger than anticipated and American military leaders made decisions that went counter to accepted military stratagaey, throwing the Japanese of their game so to speak and winning early, crucial victories.
No one voluntarily enters a war they don't think they can win. As can be seen by the Iraq War, it is difficult to accurately predict the fighting resolve and capabilities of a population.

Because Hitler like Napolean thought he could fight Russia. Somewhere in WWII Hitler became arrogent and turned on his Russian allies causing a 2 front battle and losing a much needed ally. Also the Japs missed a strategic strike of fueling tanks at pearl harbor that would have given them control of the pacific without much of a fight. Getting the Americans involved in the war by attacking pearl harbor too early in the war also proved to be a crippling affect to the Nazi Cause. Also The U.S. was either the first or the only country willing to drop the A-Bomb. Hitler had fought a darn good battle with years of planning and fear. The Japs were putting up a good fight as well but 2 A-Bombs and a defeated Hitler proved too much.

First of all, it was the Germans, the Japanese and the Russians. And we, the Allies, were very, very lucky that Hitler was a bonehead as a military leader. If he had been assasinated and one of his generals had taken over, they would all be speaking German from Wales to Turkey. Hitler insisted on invading Russia, which was his biggest mistake...and was stuck there in one of the worst winters in recorded history. Brilliant!

The Japanese and Germans both believed that Americans were unlikely to get involved in the war, even after being attacked. The Germans also underestimated how difficult it would be to conquer a nation as large and populated as the Soviet Union.

In a large portion it is because they tried to use the military force that defeated poland and austria to take on russia, france and germany. look at the military and industrial power of these two sets and you will see why they were unable to defeat them
