He wanted to be a modern-day Caliphate like Saladin. He imagined that, after defeating Iran, he'd be indisputed leader of the Middle East.

I would hope that online somewhere, they have pictures of his unbelievably numerous palaces. He was preparing for the day when Baghdad would be like Vienna during the Austro-Hungarian empire, replete with countless impressive buildings, as monuments to his monumental ego and lust for power.

Saddam wanted to unite all people of the Middle East under his powerful regime, and have the Baathists control it all.

If you have the chance, look at the video "A Lighthearted Look at The Butcher of Baghdad". It shows one palace he was working on where he had some lake contructed that would have made the reflecting pond in Washington D.C. look like a kiddie's play pool.

To remain as dictator and kick up as much dust as he
could with his neighbors and his own people...he
believed he was the guy in Nostradomus's Turbin...
and quite frankly, I'm not sure he isn't..very possible
they hanged a double...the real shocker will be when he
takes his position back and with a lot more awsome power!
