Heterogeneous is a fancy way of saying that something is not consistent. The opposite of this is Homogeneous. I hate to say this but the easiest way of remembering this is homo and heterosexual. Homosexuals like the SAME sex and Heterosexuals like Different sexes. So to answer your question. Heterogeneous materials would be things like, concrete because there are rocks and sand in it. Another example would be something like "trail mix" because it is made up of different food items. You could even say that air is a heterogeneous substance because air is made up of Oxygen, Nitrogen, Carbon Dioxide and other trace gasses. Examples of homogeneous substances would be things like Jello or water.

Heterogeneous mixtures are mixtures with indefinite composition, for example, granite. Salad is a typical example of this kind of mixture. Heterogeneous mixtures are said to have several phases (not to be confused with phases of matter). The parts of a heterogeneous composition can be mechanically separated from each other. Examples include salad and trail mix.

They are mixtures (with 2 different colors unlike water and salt). So examples can be lead and water, sand and water, sand and iron, it can be pencils with pens. It's really anything that is mixed physically and do not disolve into each other.
