It is OBVIOUS that they make these vehicles that get 50 MPG over in Europe, so why can't they do that here in the US? Why doesn't our government FORCE the car companies to do so here in the USA? It would help with air quality as well as consumers pocket books.

The vehicles that are in Europe getting this kind of gas mileage are not small vehicles either!

Because it would not be good Politician's pocket books.
You see, they have been taking kick-backs from the big three auto manufacturers and the oil companies for years.
It has even been proven that a vehicle capable of running on pure water can be made to go 70MPH and would be affordable
for the average consumer, But somehow that never made the public media circles, So.....You Tell Me.

Europe has cars running 1.1 to 1.9 liter engines and also diesels that make good mpgs.
The US government will never push the car companies to create vehicles that make 50+ mpg! You will have to make these mods yourself. The government is making so much money with black gold, and will continue to do this until 1- people stop buying it (never happen) 2- oil runs out...So it may be another 20 yrs before that happens.
Here is a car that burns HHO and makes better then 50mpg:

Although this states we are getting 80mpg hwy (I'm not going into details here because YA is a waste of my time) We have been making 50+ mpg on both test vehicles. A ford engineer is planning to document our savings. I don't expect it to go any further then that. We will continue testing.

If you travel to Europe, you will see that there are many small cars, and few pickup trucks, and almost no SUVs. People like the small cars. Many of the roads are narrow. Many of the parking spaces are small. People like the small cars for many reasons, including the fact that they get good mileage. Gas prices are higher there.

In the US, many people buy pick up trucks and SUVs as their commuting vehicle. This is a waste of gas. If people want to buy SUVs, how is the government going to force the manufacturers to sell more small cars? Some people feel that small cars are dangerous because they would get hurt in an accident with a large SUV.

Many Americans don't like small cars. And even more Americans don't wan't their government to FORCE them to do things. It's called freedom. The Democrats tried to do something like this in a recent energy bill they were debating in congress. But the Democrats are in bed with the Unions and they nixed the deal. The US auto workers would be out of jobs because big cars, SUVs, and Pickup Trucks are what the American Car companys do best.

If gas prices go up to $5/gallon you will see many more small, fuel-efficient vehicles in the US and fewer gas guzzling SUVs. Congress may pass energy legislation soon that would mandate an increase in auto manufacturers CAFE standards. An increase in the gas tax to raise gasoline prices to European levels is out of the question. No politician has the guts to do it, as he would be voted out in his next election.

Americans won't buy small, fuel efficient cars in great numbers unless the price of gasoline goes well past its current $3/gallon price, and our govt won't force people to buy fuel-efficient cars.

Because American are too isolated to notice, so the American car manufacturers, in league with the oil companies can get away with selling poor products.

But fear not, the Japanese and European car exporters will come to America's rescue.

Please give a source for this. I am very interested in vehicle that get that kind of mielage. I haven't found anything but hybrids claiming that. And hybrids are misleading because they usually do not include the power from charging from the power grid.
