I gave up on 1 August 1988, after 30 years of serious drinking.
I was socially insecure and drank to give myself a false sense of confidence - which worked until I went over my personal limit, when I became obnoxious.
Took more courage and will power to stop than I thought I possessed - it was a close call. But it has been the best decision I ever made, as well as the hardest.

Beer - to be social but not get wasted, because I hate beer, which ensures that I will have a drink in hand the whole night but drink it so damn slow that I will be as sober when I leave as when I got there.
White wine - to complement dinner.
Red wine - to pass the **** out.
Liqueur/coffee - to unwind.
Cocktails - to get tipsy and therefore happy.
Shots - to get wasted as fast as possible so I can bow out with the excuse that I'm too messed up to stay.

Because it tastes nice, and helps me relax. I don't drink it to forget my problems, I like a drink with dinner, and at night when I'm snuggled on the couch watching TV, and when I'm out with friends. As long as you're responsible, there's nothing wrong with having a drink.
