Sometimes when there is an annoucement in the paper of the pending wedding-or a bridal shower -they tell of a shop where the couple have a gift registry that itemized things they would like to have and that is so handy and you can't miss on that,otherwise, what are their likes and it pays to know their dislikes! (Also color preferences).
Otherwise, a gift certificate at a nice place never goes wrong and they love to make their own selections.
In "my day" we never included the store sales slip with the gift but it is done nowdays in case of dupllications,etc.

Something handmade from the heart- if you are good at it.
Something particularly meaningful to the couple- A Lladro bride and groom, Crystal champagne flutes, gift certificate to a special place.

Anything electronic.LOL I usually get something I think the bride and groom need but never think of getting like it's not the frist thing to cross their minds. Like a can opener or something but of course with another gift attached.LOL
