Why do westerners think that arab/muslim countries treat women like 2nd class citizens?

Some of them don't have knowledge , and some of them just want to say anything bad about us,

The problem is , the one who give them this information want to give a bad picture abt us.

And its our problem also , bcoz we just sit in our place , we dont try to tell the people abt our culture and beliefs.

if ur talkin about Americans most of them cant locate their country on the world map and they think that Arabs still ride camels and have no cars nd if u tell them that u've seen more porches nd ferrari's than u've seen in the States they will never beleive u. so we should'nt expect them to know about how men treat women in the Arab countries. Their only window to the outer world is Fox News and CNN which are both biased nd never show the complete picture. European people understand more because they travel more and see more arabs and muslims. Did u know that 90% of UK citizens have passports wheras only 10% of Americans do! so 90% of Americans nevertraveled overseas

Most European / American countries, have this idea that all Muslims are terrorists.

Also they think that all Muslim women are covered from head to toes.

also they think that Muslim women have no rights or cannot say or do what they want.

Now that is plain stupid.

I work in the gulf, and have been working for 2 years now with many American/ European nationalities, and from what they say to me is the following "we really didn't know that Muslims can go out without veils, or talk with guys , etc.., but from when they started working in the gulf, they got their facts straight"

It's the media that corrupts everything, and its those people who don't care to do their researches and rely on the easiest way to take the wrong ideas.

So, just don't listen to anyone, Do what your heart says, and forget un educated westerns also

Because they are generalzing. You can call it ignorance, but they do not bother to dig deeper to research what they are not familiar with. Just as in the west there are different types of people, so too are there in arab/muslim communities and cutures. Opinions are formed and assumptions based on what is reported to them. Americans are judged by what television shows and hollywood films depict life to be in America. They are nor 100% wrong, but not 100% correct either.

Me too thought the same thing tho but i soon realised not all arabic nations are like Saudi and stuff.

right after 9-11 I met my first freind who was from Egypt! we became freinds and I learned so much from him,I learned about weddings (his father sent a video of his sisters wedding) and it was so much like our weddings! (Im Christian as you know) He was the nicest guy in the world! He made me my first Islamic Dinner! and it was delicious !he taught me there are good and bad people in all religions! I have many freinds from Egypt,Morocco,and of course Lebannon! They are hard working people and love their families and the best way for a westerner to learn is from them!! Peace!
PS I would like to note that my sister who is a Christian is not treated as good as a man is!

i agree with muhommad mainly because they have no education on the subject and dont want to educate there selves.. but i must say with that.. some countries still treat women as low class servants.. like saudi.. women have alot of rules to follow that men do not have to follow. I think that most westerners see this and think that this is the whole world.. like one person came up to my husband and I and ask what we thought about Iraqi war.. we were like um lebanon is no where near iraq the guy said really i thought it was all the same country lool see what i mean ?
