I flipped a switch in my office and the lights and outlets went out in a couple other rooms too. It wasn't the breaker that would be too easy. I used my tester and found that all of the outlets/switches that aren't working have juice to the neutral, hot and ground. It's also an old house so there is no common sense to what wires run to what devices. What could cause everything to be "hot"?

It sounds like you have a dead short somewhere in your wiring. More than likely the problem could be in a switch or outlet. If you are familiar with electricity, one way to check it would be turn off all power to the circuit and start unhooking the wires to the outlets and switches, and check for any shorts (low resistance). The problem should most likely be in a place where there is a lot of motion for something to wear down (light switch or outlet frequently used). I would start with the lightswitch first. It is common for contacts in light switches to go bad over time.

So you are saying that you have line voltage across the neutral and ground, not the hot and ground? That would indicate they are wired backwards.

Since it is an old house and several things are not working you might be best of hiring an electrician to troubleshoot.

This problem would be solved a lot easier with an electrician. It may not cost too much.
