I have a couple hairline cracks toward the top of my Shakespear VHF antenna. The antenna is around 8' or so, and the cracks run lenghwise, about 4 inches, toward the top. Will this affect VHF reception? Can I seal the crack with 5200 or something?

Go to the auto store and get a fiberglass repair kit. Mix up the resin and wrap the cloth around the antenna, saturate it with the resin and let it dry. It will last a very long time and will have no effect on the antenna performance.

if the cable wrapped around the shaft is not broken, you can seal it with a fiberglass wrap or an epoxy coating.
